Bola Ahmed Adekunle Tinubu became Nigeria's 16th president in 2023, winning a decisive election against Atiku Abubakar and Peter Obi. At 71 years old, he brought decades of political experience to the nation's highest office. His victory marked a significant milestone in Nigeria's democratic journey.

Tinubu was born on March 29, 1952, in southwestern Nigeria. His early years were spent in the region before he made the bold decision to pursue higher education abroad. He studied accounting at Chicago State University in the United States, equipping himself with the technical skills that would shape his career.

He returned to Nigeria in the 1980s and found work as an accountant at Mobil Nigeria. The corporate world suited him, but politics called louder. In 1992, he entered the political arena as a Lagos West senatorial candidate under the Social Democratic Party banner.

The military government of Sani Abacha dissolved the Senate in 1993, forcing Tinubu into exile. Rather than fade away, he became an activist campaigning for democracy's return. He joined the National Democratic Coalition movement and fought against military rule from abroad.

When democracy returned, Tinubu ran for governor of Lagos State. He won by a wide margin as a member of the Alliance for Democracy in the first post-transition election. Four years later, voters returned him to office for a second term, affirming their confidence in his leadership.

He left office in 2007 but remained influential in Nigerian politics. Tinubu played a key role in forming the All Progressives Congress in 2013, positioning himself as a major political force. The party would become the vehicle for his presidential ambitions.

His government has already made bold moves since taking office in 2023. It ended prior fuel subsidies, citing fiscal pressures on the nation's resources. Tinubu has also dissolved the governing boards of numerous federal agencies and state-owned enterprises, signaling major structural changes ahead.
