# Bert Ganapin: The Musician Nigeria Forgot
Most Nigerians who lived through the 1980s remember "Asewo Te Asewo," the infectious highlife track that played in bars across Lagos and Ibadan. Bert Ganapin wrote it. Few remember his name.
Ganapin emerged from the Nigerian highlife scene when the genre still dominated radio. He worked primarily in Lagos, recording with various bands throughout the late 1970s and early 1980s. His musical style blended traditional Yoruba rhythms with Western instrumentation, a formula that worked well in dancehalls and wedding ceremonies.
His catalog included several singles that found regional success. "Asewo Te Asewo" became his biggest hit, played regularly on Lagos radio stations. Other tracks like "Money Matters" gained traction in southwestern Nigeria. He recorded primarily with smaller record labels that lacked the distribution power of major houses.
The rise of Juju music and Afrobeat in the 1980s shifted Nigerian listeners' attention elsewhere. Ganapin continued recording but never achieved the commercial breakthrough that might have secured his legacy. His later work failed to recapture the momentum of his earlier releases.
By the 1990s, Ganapin had largely faded from the music industry. He performed occasionally at private events and cultural festivals in Lagos. Most younger Nigerians never encountered his music.
Ganapin's story reflects a common pattern in Nigerian music history. Many talented musicians of his era simply disappeared from public memory. Better-funded competitors or simply changing tastes left them behind.
Today, Ganapin's recordings exist primarily in private collections and obscure archives. Music historians occasionally reference his work when discussing the evolution of Nigerian highlife. His contribution to the genre remains real but largely unrecognized. "Asewo Te Asewo" occasionally surfaces on nostalgia playlists, a brief reminder that he once made people dance.
