About Aliko Dangote

Cement was still being imported into Africa when Aliko Dangote walked into the Nigerian market to build an empire from the ground up.

Aliko Mohammad Dangote was born on April 10, 1957. His father, a wealthy businessman, gave him more than just a name—he gave him a blueprint for ambition. The family's influence in Nigeria's business circles ran deep.

In 1977, at just 20 years old, Dangote founded the Dangote Group. What started as a small commodity trading company importing sugar, salt, and food products would reshape Nigeria's industrial landscape. Four years later, he founded Dangote Nigeria Limited and Blue Star Services, both moving bulk materials like rice, steel, and aluminum across the country. The demand kept growing.

By the 1990s, Dangote saw an opportunity. While Lafarge, a French cement manufacturer, dominated Africa's import market, Dangote decided to build. He founded Dangote Cement and challenged the foreign monopoly head-on. The company didn't just compete—it won. As of 2023, Dangote Cement generated $3.7 billion in revenue, making it one of Africa's largest cement producers.

His influence extended far beyond factories and warehouses. In 2011, President Goodluck Jonathan appointed him to the economic management team. That same year, Jonathan awarded him the Grand Commander of the Order of the Niger, one of Nigeria's highest honors. Time magazine listed him among the 100 most influential people in the world in 2014.

Today, Dangote Sugar Refinery ranks among Africa's largest sugar producers. The Dangote Refinery stands as another monument to his vision. According to Bloomberg Billionaires Index and Forbes, he is the 69th richest person globally and the wealthiest Black individual, with a net worth of nearly $32.5 billion as of 2026.

From commodity trading to industrial dominance, Dangote built something few Africans had built before. He didn't just create a business empire. He proved that African entrepreneurs could outcompete the world.
