About Akinwunmi Ambode
Akinwunmi Ambode was Governor of Lagos State from 2015 to 2019, leading Nigeria's most populous and economically vital state during a critical period of growth. His four-year tenure reshaped governance in the megacity and left a lasting imprint on how public administration was conducted at the state level.
Born on June 14, 1963, Ambode built his career through discipline and technical expertise. He spent 27 years as a civil servant, mastering the inner workings of government systems and policy implementation. This long apprenticeship shaped his approach to public service.
Before entering electoral politics, Ambode worked as a financial consultant. His background in finance and administration made him an unconventional candidate—a technocrat rather than a traditional politician. Many observers saw his expertise as exactly what Lagos needed.
In April 2015, Ambode ran for Governor of Lagos State under the All Progressives Congress banner. The party was in control of the state, and Ambode emerged from a competitive primary race. He faced Jimi Agbaje of the Peoples Democratic Party in the general election.
The contest was remarkably close. Ambode won by a margin of just 150,000 votes in a state with millions of eligible voters. On May 29, 2015, he was sworn in as governor, succeeding Babatunde Fashola.
His first term progressed without major upheaval. But in October 2018, internal party politics shifted against him. Ambode lost the APC gubernatorial primary to Babajide Sanwo-Olu, effectively ending his bid for a second term.
Rather than resist the outcome, Ambode backed Sanwo-Olu's campaign. His decision to support the transition ensured stability in Lagos politics and demonstrated political maturity. The state moved forward without the rancor that sometimes accompanies power changes.
Ambode's journey from 27 years of civil service to four years as governor reflects a career defined by institutional knowledge and technical governance. His narrow victory, unexpected primary loss, and graceful exit shaped a political narrative that continues to influence Lagos State politics today.
