The Kaduna State governor's office was still settling into its new democratic era when Ahmed Mohammed Makarfi took over on May 29, 1999. He would spend the next eight years shaping the political landscape of Nigeria's northern heartland.

Makarfi was born on August 8, 1956, into Nigeria's evolving political consciousness. His rise came during the country's transition from military rule back to civilian democracy.

As governor of Kaduna State from 1999 to 2007, Makarfi became a prominent figure in the Peoples Democratic Party.
