About Ahmad Ibrahim Lawan
The gavel fell in June 2019 when Ahmad Lawan was elected the 14th President of the Nigerian Senate. He had won with 79 votes, defeating Senator Mohammed Ali Ndume who garnered 28 votes after the inauguration of the 9th National Assembly. It was a moment that validated years of political perseverance.
Ahmad Ibrahim Lawan was born on January 12, 1959, in Gashua, Yobe State. Before politics claimed him, he was a university lecturer. The classroom was where he honed his craft as an educator and communicator.
His political journey began in 1999 when he was first elected to the House of Representatives. He represented the Bade/Jakusko Constituency as a member of the All Nigeria Peoples Party. That same year, lawmakers across Nigeria were finding their feet in a newly democratized nation.
Lawan was reelected to the House in 2003. Two years later, he made his next move. In 2007, he successfully ran to become Yobe North Senator, stepping into the upper chamber of the legislature.
The Senate became his stronghold. He was reelected in 2011, then again in 2015. Each election reinforced his grip on the Yobe North Senatorial District. But the presidency of the Senate eluded him in 2015 when he made his first attempt. That loss, however, was temporary.
When the 9th National Assembly was inaugurated in 2019, Lawan came back stronger. He switched his political home to the All Progressive Congress, successor to the ANPP. The party's machinery aligned behind him this time. He won the Senate presidency with commanding support from his colleagues.
From 2019 to 2023, Lawan presided over one of Nigeria's most turbulent legislative periods. The Senate under his leadership navigated the final years of Buhari's administration and prepared for a transition. He served until 2023, when a new administration took office.
Today, Ahmad Lawan remains a defining figure in Nigerian legislative politics. A former lecturer who became one of the Senate's most powerful leaders, his career spans over two decades in public service.
