# Ade Bakare: The Striker Who Made Africa Proud

Most Nigerians remember exactly where they were when Emmanuel Adebayor was voted African Footballer of the Year in 2008. The striker, then at Arsenal, had become a continental icon. His name was on every lip from Lagos to Kano.

Sheyi Emmanuel Adebayor was born on February 26, 1984. He would go on to play for some of Europe's biggest clubs. Arsenal, Manchester City, Tottenham Hotspur, and Crystal Palace all benefited from his finishing.

His journey took him across continents. Real Madrid came calling, as did French side Metz and Monaco. He played in Turkey for İstanbul Başakşehir and Kayserispor. Few African strikers have commanded such global respect.

In 2006, Adebayor represented Togo at the FIFA World Cup in Germany. It was the nation's first World Cup appearance. He carried the hopes of an entire country on his shoulders. Four years later, tragedy struck when the Togo national team bus came under gunfire en route to the 2010 Africa Cup of Nations in Angola. Adebayor stepped away from international football after that incident.

He returned in 2013 for the African Cup of Nations in South Africa. The decision proved worthwhile. He helped Togo reach the quarter-finals. By then, he had already etched his name into history as Togo's all-time top goalscorer with 32 goals.

Later in his career, Adebayor moved to South America. He joined Club Olimpia in Paraguay in 2020. At that stage, he became the highest paid player in the entire Paraguayan league. Age had not dimmed his marketability or his skill.

Adebayor's career spanned continents and decades. From the Premier League to La Liga to South American football, he left his mark everywhere. He proved that an African striker could compete at the highest levels. His legacy extends far beyond goals and trophies. He showed young players from the continent that the world's greatest stages were within reach.
