About Abubakar Shekau

# Abubakar Shekau: The Boko Haram Leader Who Reshaped Nigeria's Security Landscape

Abubakar Mohammed Shekau was the leader of Boko Haram, an extremist organization based in northeastern Nigeria. He took control of the group in 2009 after the execution of its founder, Mohammed Yusuf, by Nigerian police. For over a decade, Shekau's leadership defined one of Africa's most brutal insurgencies.

Shekau had served as deputy leader under Yusuf before rising to power. Nigerian authorities initially believed he was killed in 2009 during clashes between security forces and Boko Haram. But in July 2010, a video emerged showing Shekau alive and claiming leadership of the organization.

Reports of his death became routine throughout his tenure. Shekau was thought to use doubles, making it difficult for authorities to verify his whereabouts. These videos kept appearing, each one reasserting his control over the group.

Human rights advocates condemned Shekau's methods relentlessly. Boko Haram under his leadership carried out bombings, forced conversions and kidnappings across Nigeria. The 2014 abduction of 276 schoolgirls in Chibok became the most notorious attack linked to his organization.

In March 2015, Shekau pledged allegiance to ISIL leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi. This shifted Boko Haram's ideological direction toward the Islamic State's framework. However, the relationship proved unstable.

By 2016, ISIS Central attempted to replace Shekau with Abu Musab al-Barnawi as leader. The move split the organization into two factions. Shekau's loyalists kept the name Boko Haram while al-Barnawi's followers became known as Islamic State's West Africa Province.

Shekau ended his formal ties to ISIL after 2016. Relations between the groups deteriorated sharply. In 2021, ISIS launched a major operation against Shekau and his remaining supporters in Sambisa Forest.

On 19 May 2021, Shekau detonated a suicide vest during fighting between Boko Haram and Islamic State's West Africa Province. The Wall Street Journal first reported his death, which Nigerian officials and ISWA later confirmed. His suicide marked the end of an era that had destabilized northeastern Nigeria for twelve years.
