PHOTOS: Kanu’s trial at Abuja High Court

Leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, Nnamdi Kanu, was present at his trial at the Federal High Court Abuja on Monday

The Federal Government had filed an amended 15-count charge of terrorism and treasonable felony against Kanu in 2021 and he was arraigned in July of the same year after his rendition from Kenya.

Justice Nyako had struck out eight out of the 15 counts after ruling on the preliminary objection filed by the defence counsel challenging the propriety of the charges.

Kanu had challenged the decision of the trial court to uphold seven out of the 15 counts, where his preliminary objection had sought the outright dismissal of the entire charges.

The Court of Appeal had dismissed the charges against Kanu on grounds that the Federal Government erred by renditioning him to Nigeria.

However, the Supreme Court overturned the judgement of the Court of Appeal, noting that the actions of the Federal Government can not render the charges or the trial a nullity.

Kanu was therefore ordered to return to the Federal High Court to continue his trial where Justice Binta Nyako had initially stayed proceedings.
