Controller of Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Bashir Adeniyi on Monday said the differential in prices of premium motor spirit (PMS ) in some neighbouring countries sharing boarders with Nigeria was still  encouraging sophisticated mode of smuggling of the products out of Nigeria.

This is just as he disclosed that the operatives of the service  through it operation “wired wind” has successfully intercepted and sized 53, 000 litres of petrol in boarder communities in Kwara state.

The intercepted products; according to the CG, were concealed in 25 litres of jerycans totalling 800 while a 33,000 litters fuel laden tanker that was meant to be delivered in Oyo state was also diverted and intercepted in a boarder community in Kwara state.

He said despite the introduction of new price regime in Nigeria, which he said is still amongst the lowest when compared to other countries, smugglers continued to device sophisticated means to divert the products out of the country.

Adeniyi spoke in Ilorin, the Kwara state capital, while briefing journalists during his official visit to the Customs Area Command in Ilorin.

His visit to the command was the first from a serving CG in 10 years and since the creation of the area command in the state.

He, however, said the Service, through its Operation Weird Wind in collaboration with other security agencies, had continued to suppress smugglers’ activities, vowing that there will be “no safe haven for them.

“When we are all together and we work towards a common goal and objectives, is easier for us to defeat smugglers,” he said

The Customs CG said 7 smugglers were currently being prosecuted, including two high profile ones in Adamawa for smuggling activities.
