Ekiti State Governor Biodun Oyebanji has launched the Ekiti Agro Marshals, a local security outfit tasked with safeguarding farmlands, schools, and palaces across the state.

Speaking yesterday during the passing out parade of the marshals in Ado-Ekiti, the state capital, Governor Oyebanji said the purpose of the initiative was to bolster the efforts of the police and other security agencies in combating criminal activities.

He said the establishment of the Agro Marshals was prompted by the president’s directive to governors to establish special guards to protect farmlands and forests.

Oyebanji stressed the importance of securing agricultural resources, educational institutions, and cultural heritage sites to foster sustainable development and communal harmony.

He reiterated his administration’s commitment to ensuring the security of lives and property, expressing confidence that through collaboration with other security agencies, Ekiti would become the safest place in the country.

While charging the marshals to uphold citizens’ fundamental human rights and discharge their duties diligently within the confines of the constitution, Oyebanji emphasised that the marshals are to complement, not replace, formal security apparatuses.

A retired Assistant Commissioner of Police, Olamide Oni, the commander of the marshals, commended the governor for prioritising the safety of the state’s residents and assured that the marshals were well-trained to carry out their duties effectively.
