The council chairman of Sardauna local government council of Taraba State, Mohammed Umar has imposed a curfew in Gembu, the administrative headquarters of the council.

The curfew which our reporter learnt will commence from 8pm to 5am on Monday, was in response to the arrest and subsequent murder of a suspect by the Civil Defence in the area.

The suspect, Haliru Waziri, was alleged to have been gruesomely beaten to death by the Civil Defense after his arrest, the action which has continued to ignite dust at the time of filing this report.

In a statement on Monday issued to journalists by the chairman, through his Special Adviser on Media, Marvellous Heli, the decision, according to him, was geared towards ensuring peace in the council as a result of the tension that was necessitated by the death of the suspect.

The timing of the curfew, as stated in the release, was arranged to accommodate the Muslim faithful observing fasting during Ramadan.

The council chairman assured the people of the council of his administration’s commitment to safeguard the lives and property of the people irrespective of tribe, religious and party differences.

The Civil Defence had earlier claimed that the suspect was identified as one of the robbers, making life cumbersome for the people of the area.

At the time of filing this report, heavily armed security operatives were said to have been deployed to the town to forestall further outbreak of law and order.
