African Games: Nigeria lose second position to South Africa

Team Nigeria has dropped to third place in the medal standings at the ongoing African Games in Accra, Ghana after failing to win any new gold medals according to the latest standings.

While Team Nigeria added three silver and four bronze medals, they were unable to keep their second-place position as at the time of press

South Africa now occupies that spot with 77 medals (22 gold, 22 silver, and 33 bronze).

Nigeria follows closely behind with 55 medals (22 gold, 13 silver, and 20 bronze).

Algeria remains hot on their heels in fourth place with 81 medals (21 gold, 27 silver, and 33 bronze).

Egypt continues to dominate the overall standings with a commanding lead of 115 medals (65 gold, 27 silver, and 23 bronze).

The host nation, Ghana, has fallen further down to 14th place with just five medals (1 gold, 3 silver, and 1 bronze).

Meanwhile, following the conclusion of the table tennis competition over the weekend, Nigeria’s Offiong Edem moved 45 places to be ranked 97th in the International Table Tennis Federation’s (ITTF) Week 11 Ranking released.

Quadri Aruna remains the highest-ranked African player in the world at 11th, while African Games champion Omar Assar of Egypt is ranked 22nd.

Similarly, the African Games saw the debut of Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) as a demonstration sport. If MMA had been a scoring sport at the Games, it would have contributed to Nigeria’s medal haul, since Team Nigeria dominated with 12 medals.
