We’re making consultations on borders’ reopening– Customs

Adewale Adeniyi, the comptroller-general (CG) of the Nigeria
Customs Service (NCS), says Nigeria is making progress with consultations on
the reopening of the borders with Niger Republic and Benin Republic.

 

Adeniyi spoke with the State House correspondents in Abuja
on Tuesday after the inauguration of the national single window (NSW) project.

Earlier, President Bola Tinubu inaugurated the NSW project
to boost trade in Nigeria.

 

NSW is an electronic portal linking all agencies and players
in import and export processes to an integrated platform.

It is domiciled at the Federal Inland Revenue Service
(FIRS).

 

Adeniyi added that he met with his Benin Republic
counterpart over the weekend to fine-tune the planned reopening of the borders.

 

Adeniyi emphasised the need for the efficient management of
the country’s borders amid the launch of the single window initiative.

The customs boss commended Tinubu over his commitment to the
Nigerian economy with the launch of the single window project.

 

In March, NCS asked residents and stakeholders of the Illela
border community in Sokoto to abide by regulations ahead of the reopening of
the border with Niger Republic.

Kamal Muhammad, the NCS comptroller in charge of the
Sokoto/Zamfara area command, visited the Illela border station.

 

Muhammad had said the decision of  the Economic Community of West African States
(ECOWAS) to lift the sanctions on Niger Republic might translate to the
reopening of the nation’s borders
