We’re getting positive feedback on tariff increase – Adelabu

The Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu has stated that the government is receiving positive feedback from electricity users since the increase of tariff for Band A users.

Recall that the government made the increase last week to enable electricity customers under the bank to enjoy premium service while paying for it without government’s intervention. 

Speaking while appearing on Politics Today on Channels Television, Adelabu stressed that the increment was made to stimulate investments while allowing the sector to serve as the beacon of revolutionising other sectors in the country. 

“We have promised that we are going to transform this sector. We have received a lot of positive feedback from communities that are enjoying this 22 to 23 hours of electricity supply while we still have some complaints here and there, we are going to look at how they can be compensated and refunded. The resistance will come and we are going to discuss and have some common ground to agree.”

He added that everybody must be ready to make a sacrifice to prevent the sector from being stagnated.

The minister said the issue manifesting in the sector today is what has accumulated overtime. 

He said one of the issues facing the sector is the poor investment in alternative energy.

“This is one of the things this administration is working on, especially solar sources. We have an investment proposal by a foreign investor to install 1gigawatt of solar energy across all the states in the northern region. There are other interested investors ready to establish 18 gigawatts of solar energy in 18 at 100 megawatt each in 20 states. These are things we are working on and believe they will translate into another source of power.”

He underscored the need for Nigeria to have a decentralised system of power to insulate it from the current challenges.
