Violence Rises In Haiti, Gang Leader Killed As Transition Council Close To Being Established
In Haiti’s capital Port-au-Prince, violence erupted on Thursday as political factions moved closer to establishing a transition council to govern in lieu of an absent government. The clashes included a shootout resulting in the death of a prominent gang leader.
Ernst Julme, also known as Ti Greg, the head of the Delmas 95 gang, was killed during a police operation, following the recent death of another gang leader.
Julme’s demise is viewed as a setback for gangs attempting to expand their control over parts of the city, especially after his recent escape from Haiti’s largest prison in a mass breakout.
Amidst the turmoil, the United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres expressed support for reports indicating progress in the formation of a transitional council to assume presidential powers until new elections can be held.
This council aims to bring together Haiti’s fractured political factions and replace de facto Prime Minister Ariel Henry, who resigned on March 11 due to escalating gang violence preventing his return to the country.
“The Secretary-General welcomes reports that Haitian stakeholders have all nominated representatives to the Transitional Presidential Council,” stated U.N. spokesperson Farhan Haq.
The transition plan, facilitated by the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) in Jamaica, involved negotiations with Haiti’s government, opposition, and various political groups.
Despite initial delays caused by factional disputes, the council’s composition is nearing finalization, with CARICOM releasing a list of participating political groups.
However, challenges persist, with some factions initially rejecting the plan and others criticizing the involvement of politicians from previous administrations perceived as corrupt.
Jimmy “Barbeque” Cherizier, a gang leader aligned with the “Viv Ansanm” alliance, has threatened retaliation against politicians and their families if they engage with the proposed council.
