MAKURDI: Four female students of Joseph Sarwuan Tarka University, Makurdi, (JOSTUM), formerly known as the Federal University of Agriculture, Makurdi (FUAM), were kidnapped by some unknown gunmen on the premises of the institution on Tuesday night.

The names of the abducted students were given as Emmanuella, Fola, Susan, and Ella.

Meanwhile, the Benue State Command of the Nigeria Police, which confirmed the incident on Wednesday, however, said that only two students were abducted.

Confirming the incident, the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), CSP Sewuese Anene, said the investigation into the abduction has commenced.

When we called the management of the institution to confirm the abduction of the students, they were not forthcoming. Even though they promised to get back to us, they were not forthcoming even at the time of going to press.

Daily Independent however gathered that the students were abducted while on campus between 8:30 and 9 pm on Tuesday.

We further gathered that the students were heading to the class to read when they were kidnapped in between their hostel and the class, situated at the North Core of the institution.

Meanwhile, a top management staff of the university, who would not want his name in print, has confirmed the incident.

However, another female student told us on condition of anonymity, “From the information we have, two of the victims have been confirmed to be 300 Level students and they reside here on campus in Zamfara hostel in the North Core part of the University. They were on their way to one of the lecture halls to read around 8:30 pm when they walked into an ambush by five unknown gunmen.

“The armed men were said to have surrounded the students and ordered them to accompany them, but they ran into the bush in a bid to escape and at the same time shouted for help.

“But the armed men cocked their guns and ordered them out of the bush or they would all be killed. The students obeyed, came out, and accompanied them. As we speak we do not know where they have taken them to.

“We are still in shock over the untoward incident involving four female students who are our friends who were kidnapped on campus last night which is simply unacceptable”, she lamented.
