The United Nation Children Fund (UNICEF) has handed over 4,290 cartons of Small Quantity Lipid Based Supplements (SQLNS) procured through joint efforts and child nutrition fund to Adamawa state government for distributions to 85,000 malnourished children in the state to tackle malnourishment.
Presenting the items in yola Thursday, UNICEF Chief Bauchi field office, Dr.Nuzhat Rafique, commended Adamawa state led by Governor Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri for partnership and exemplary leadership towards Unicef activities.
She explained that, the child nutrition match fund supported by generous mix of donors like United kingdom, children’s investment fund foundation, the Bill and Melinda gates foundation and other partners is managed by UNICEF.
Dr.Nuzhat further noted that Adamawa was one of the early adopters of the child nutrition fund in Nigeria.
She said the state is consistent with counterpart funds, noting that the state released 100 million naira in 2023 which was matched by the same amount by UNICEF.
According to her, SQLNS is a food supplement designed mainly to prevent undernutrition and improve child survival, growth and development.
She added that over 80% of children in the state suffer from childhood poverty, lack access to diverse diet to support growth and development.
She called on the state Government to invest more resources into children health in 2025.
Responding the state commissioner for Health, Hon.Felix Tangwami, commended UNICEF for the intervation, which he described as timely and would go along way to addressed the challenges of nutrition and other health issues in the state for the betterment of all.
He reiterated the commitments of the present administration in the state to keep on the good work of giving priority to health sector.
