War: Win for Ukraine as UN rejects US resolution

3 hours ago 17

The United States on Monday failed to secure approval from the United Nations General Assembly for its resolution urging an end to the war in Ukraine without mentioning Moscow’s aggression.

According to The Washington Post, the development marks a victory for Ukraine on the third anniversary of Russia’s invasion.

It also represents a setback for the US President, Donald Trump’s administration, in the 193-member world body, whose resolutions are not legally binding but are considered a barometer of global opinion.

The United States had attempted to pressure the Ukrainians to withdraw their resolution in favour of its own proposal, according to a US official and a European diplomat who spoke to The Washington Post on condition of anonymity.

They refused, prompting the assembly to amend the US proposal to explicitly state that Russia invaded its smaller neighbour in violation of the UN Charter.

The vote on the amended US resolution was 93–8, with 73 abstentions. Ukraine voted “yes,” the US abstained, and Russia voted “no.”
