UGS Marks 50th Anniversary, To Re-Energize For School’s Development

As part of week-long activities marking the diamond jubilee of the United Grammar School (UGS), Ode Irele, in Ondo State, scores of its alumni around the world will converge on the school beginning from Monday, to renew their commitment to infrastructural and human development in the institution.

Under the aegis of the United Grammar School Old Students Association, (UGSOSA) the alumni will feature a public lecture, titled: “Education and National Development: The Role of Alumni Association,” to be delivered by the former Vice Chancellor of Adekunle Ajasin University, and an alumnus of the school, Prof. Igbekele Ajibefun.

According to a statement signed by the association’s National President, Bayowale Iji and General Secretary/Publicity Committee Chairman, Dr, Biyi Adegoroye, UGSOSA seeks to raise the sum of N250 million school development fund in addition to the four classrooms they have renovated and furnished in the last five years.

Besides the above, the old students plan to dress in anniversary T-shirts and embark on a procession around the town to climax with a novelty football match at UGS. 

This will be followed by an inter-school quiz competition among all secondary schools in the local government.

Ondo State Governor, Lucky Aiyedatiwa, is expected as guest of honour, while those to be honoured on the occasion are the Speaker of Ondo State House of Assembly,   Olumide Oladiji, alumni of the school, Bayo Iji, Martins Akinmoju,  Sam Odimayo the Deputy Editor of Sunday Telegraph, Dr. Biyi Adegoroye, Mrs. Beatrice Obanla. The event will climax with a thanksgiving service at the Methodist Church, Ode Irele.

Created on February 21, 1965, in the then Okitipupa Division in the South-West Nigeria, Division, now comprising five of the local government areas, namely: Okitipupa, Irele, Ilaje, Ese-odo and Odigbo, UGS has become one of the fastest-growing secondary schools, which has produced scores of intellectuals, traditional rulers, politicians, professors and business icons.
