Tuggar Calls For Inclusive Global Reforms At G20 Meeting In South Africa

ABUJA – The Nigeria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Amb. Yusuf Maitama Tuggar, has called for urgent global reforms to promote economic equity, peace, and security at the ongoing G20 Foreign Ministers’ Meeting in Johannesburg.

Speaking at the high-level gathering, Tuggar congratulated South Africa on assuming the G20 Presidency and expressed Nigeria’s full support for its priorities, including disaster resilience, debt sustainability, just energy transition, and the harnessing of critical minerals for inclusive growth.

Special Assistant on Media and Communications Strategy, Alkasim Abdulkadir on Thursday said while addressing global conflicts and humanitarian crises, Tuggar urged the G20 to strengthen mechanisms for peaceful conflict resolution, humanitarian assistance, and African-led peace initiatives. He also emphasized the need for a comprehensive approach to combating terrorism, focusing on security as well as socio-economic development through investments in education, healthcare, and job creation.

Tuggar reiterated Nigeria’s call for urgent reforms in multilateral institutions, arguing that the current global system does not adequately represent the realities of developing nations. He also highlighted tax justice as a key issue, urging the G20 to support President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s proposals to combat capital flight and tax evasion by multinational corporations.

Furthermore, Nigeria raised concerns over illicit financial flows (IFFs), which drain billions from Africa annually through corruption and illegal trade practices. Tuggar called for greater transparency in global financial transactions, stricter regulations on tax havens, and stronger international cooperation to recover stolen assets.

He also emphasized that the solidarity, equity, and sustainability must guide the G20’s actions, urging global leaders to build a fairer and more inclusive world. Nigeria, he reaffirmed, remains committed to working with international partners to ensure no nation is left behind.
