Traditional Rulers Urged To Intervene In Herders-Farmers Conflicts

1 week ago 21

DAMATURU – The Kulen Allah Cattle Rearers Association of Nigeria (KACRAN) has made a passionate appeal to traditional rulers across the country to take proactive measures in resolving the ongoing conflicts between herders and farmers. This call to action is rooted in the historical role of traditional rulers as custodians of land and their continued influence in mediating disputes.

According to KACRAN, traditional rulers have the authority to grant permission for grazing and farming, ensuring mutual respect and cooperation between herders and farmers. The association acknowledges the efforts of some traditional rulers, such as the Emir of Fika, Alhaji Muhammad Ibn Abali Ibn Idrisa, who has actively engaged with KACRAN to maintain peace during farming seasons.¹

The Emir of Fika’s initiatives include monitoring grazing reserves and enforcing compliance to prevent encroachment. His decisive action in a recent incident involving the Gadana grazing reserve prevented potential conflicts. Similarly, the Emir of Bade, Alhaji Abubakar Umar Suleiman, has been commended for his role in assisting the Yobe State Government in reclaiming the Jakusko Nasari grazing reserve from encroachment by farmers.

KACRAN’s appeal to traditional rulers is based on their respected status as community leaders, which positions them uniquely to facilitate dialogue and reconciliation. The association also calls upon state governments to empower traditional rulers by providing them with administrative authority, financial resources, and logistical support to effectively mediate conflicts within their domains.

Hon. Khalil Mohd Bello, National President of KACRAN, emphasized the importance of traditional rulers’ involvement in resolving herders-farmers conflicts. “Our Traditional Leaders are well-positioned to contribute significantly to national peace and stability. It is imperative to fully engage them and provide the necessary support to achieve timely and effective resolutions.”

KACRAN’s appeal is a call to action for traditional rulers to take a proactive role in resolving the ongoing conflicts between herders and farmers. By leveraging their influence and authority, traditional rulers can facilitate dialogue, reconciliation, and peaceful coexistence between these groups.
