Trace Awards Tour Stops In Lagos Ahead Of Zanzibar Event

1 week ago 28

The highly anticipated second edition of the Trace Awards is set to take place at The Mora, Zanzibar, Tanzania, on February 26, 2025. As a prelude to the prestigious global event, a nominee reception press conference was held in Lagos, bringing together key industry figures, nominees, and representatives from the show’s sponsors to discuss expectations for the upcoming awards ceremony.

Among those in attendance were Sam Onyemelukwe, Managing Director of Trace West Africa; celebrated disc jockey DJ Neptune; renowned video director TG Omori; Kemi Longe, Portfolio Director for Southern, Western, and Central Africa at Diageo; and Adefemi Adenira, Director of Corporate Communications and CSR at Airtel Nigeria.

Speaking at the event, Sam Onyemelukwe emphasized the significance of the Trace Awards in elevating African music on the global stage.

He said, “For me, the Trace Awards is personal. We worked on it for many years before launching the first edition last year. This award is crucial because the culture that originated from the streets of Lagos has now gone global. Trace has played a key role in the Afrobeats and Amapiano movements, and we couldn’t allow outsiders to take ownership of our culture. We had to stand up for Africa.”

Onyemelukwe also addressed the decision to host the awards outside Nigeria, stating:

“Our goal is to unite the continent while showcasing Africa’s beauty. Zanzibar is an incredible destination, and this year’s show will offer a unique experience. Unlike last year’s arena-style setup, this time we are taking the event to the beach, promising an unforgettable visual spectacle.”

DJ Neptune shared his excitement about the event, particularly regarding the inclusion of DJs in the awards.

“Kudos to Trace for acknowledging DJs this year. I’m looking forward to the awards in Zanzibar—it’s a fantastic destination, and hopefully, we bring it back home soon.”

Kemi Longe highlighted Johnnie Walker’s dedication to supporting the creative industry.

“Johnnie Walker is deeply passionate about music. Our ‘Keep Walking’ philosophy embodies progress, consistency, bold innovation, and creativity—values that align perfectly with the Trace Awards. That’s why we are proudly sponsoring two major categories: Song of the Year and Best Newcomer, celebrating the artists shaping the future of African music.”

Also, renowned video director, TG Omori, known for his groundbreaking visuals, praised the recognition of directors in the awards.

“It’s amazing to see the Trace Awards acknowledging directors. Next year, I hope to see a Director of the Year category alongside Producer of the Year.”

Conclusively, Adefemi Adenira, Director of Corporate Communications and CSR at Airtel Nigeria, reinforced the company’s deep-rooted connection to music.

“Music is part of Airtel’s DNA. Whether we are celebrating African traditions, supporting talent across the continent, or using music to engage with consumers, it has always been at the heart of our brand.”

As the countdown to the Trace Awards in Zanzibar begins, anticipation continues to build for an event that promises to celebrate and elevate African music on a global scale.
