President Bola Tinubu has officially designated April 7 as National Police Day.

The announcement was made by President Tinubu during the inaugural awards and commendations ceremony hosted by the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) in Abuja on Monday.

Represented by Vice President Kashim Shettima at the occasion, President Tinubu spoke via a speech entitled, “Courage Under Fire: A Bouquet for Our Police Force,” highlighting the critical role of the police in maintaining security at a time when Nigeria faces unprecedented challenges.

“At a time in Nigeria’s history when our nation’s security architecture is being stretched beyond elastic limits, it is the unwavering commitment of our police force that has allowed our citizens to endure despite severe threats to their lives and livelihoods,” Shettima stated.

The Vice President also detailed the administration’s commitment to transforming the Nigeria Police Force.

“We are unequivocal about our resolve to transform the Nigeria Police Force into a modern, professional, and accountable institution that mirrors the aspirations and values of our nation,” he affirmed.

As part of the government’s comprehensive reforms, significant investments are being made in training and capacity building. This initiative aims to equip police officers with the essential knowledge, skills, values, and expertise needed to address the complexities of modern policing effectively. Additionally, there will be an upgrade in equipment and technology to enhance the operational effectiveness and efficiency of the force.

The declaration of National Police Day is seen as a step toward recognising and honouring the brave men and women of the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) for their dedication and service to the nation.
