TCN blames grid collapse on fire incident

The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has stated that a fire incident at the Afam Power Generating Station was responsible for the grid collapse that occurred yesterday.

A statement by TCN’s General Manager, Public Affairs, Ndidi Mbah, said the incident caused a partial disturbance of the nation’s grid.

While stating that the grid has been fully restored, she said the incident had led to a sudden generation loss of 25MW and 305MW respectively, destabilising the grid.

 Daily Trust had reported that the collapse occurred at 02:41 am on Monday leaving the country with 64.70megawatt with only one generation company, Ibom Power, active according to data from the Independent System Operator (ISO), a branch of the Transmission Company of Nigeria.

 This will be the sixth collapse in 2024.

 Daily Trust reports that the grid dropped to 44.50MW by 4am but peaked to 3,038 around 6pm.

The statement went on to state that: “A fire erupted at the Afam V 330KV busbar coupler, leading to the tripping of units at Afam III and Afam VI. This resulted in a sudden generation loss of 25MW and 305MW respectively, destabilising the grid and causing a partial collapse.
