Service chiefs meet with senators over Delta killings

The Senate Joint Committee on Defence, Army, Navy and Air Force met with Service Chiefs, on Wednesday, over the killing of 17 military personnel in Okuama community in Delta State. 

The meeting, which held at the National Assembly in Abuja, had in attendance the Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), General Christopher Gwabin Musa; Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lt. General Taoreed Lagbaja; Chief of Air Staff (CAS), Air Marshal Hassan; and Chief of Naval Staff (CNS), Vice Admiral Emmanuel Ogalla.

Recall that the Senate, during plenary on Tuesday, mandated the joint committees to investigate the circumstances resulting in the killings of the soldiers.

Daily Trust had reported how troops attached to 181 Amphibious Batallion, Ughelli South Local Government Area of Delta, were killed while on peace mission.

Addressing newsmen after their closed-door meeting, Chairman, Senate Committee on Army, Senator Ahmad Lawan (APC, Yobe North) who was flanked by other Senators, said they were briefed by the security chiefs, but that they were still gathering information about the killings.

Lawan said after their findings, the joint committee would report back to the senate accordingly.

He assured that the perpetrators of the dastardly act would be brought to justice as directed by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

Lawan said, “We have been briefed of what happened and this meeting is the first with respect that we will hold subsequent meetings while we gather more information as to what happened.

“The Senate particularly, and the National Assembly stand solidly with our armed forces. We will continue to support our armed forces.”
