The Senate on Thursday urged the Federal Government to immortalise the late leader of Afenifere, Chief Samuel Ayodele Adebanjo, by naming a national monument after him.
This is coming on the heels of the lawmakers resolv to send a high-powered delegation to condole with his family, the people of Ijebuland, and the Ogun State Government over his passing.
The senators, in plenary on Thursday, paid glowing tribute to the late leader of Afenifere, Chief Samuel Ayodele Adebanjo, describing him as a titan of democracy, a fearless statesman, and a lifelong advocate for justice and good governance.
The revered elder statesman passed away at the age of 96, leaving behind a legacy of resilience, activism, and dedication to the Nigerian cause.
In a motion sponsored by Sen. Gbenga Daniel (Ogun East), the Senate noted with deep sorrow but immense gratitude, the demise of Chief Adebanjo, a man whose life they said was dedicated to the pursuit of democracy and national unity.
He further recalled that as the leader of Afenifere, Chief Adebanjo remained a steadfast force in the struggle for democracy. “He consistently spoke truth to power, not out of defiance, but out of a firm commitment to justice, good governance, and the well-being of Nigerians,” he said.
“His unwavering convictions earned him respect across political divides, cementing his status as an institution rather than just an individual,” the lawmaker added.
Chief Adebanjo, who is survived by his 94-year-old wife, Chief Christy Ayo-Adebanjo, children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, left behind a remarkable legacy. The Senate recognized that his passing is not just a loss to the Yoruba nation but to Nigeria as a whole.
