Liverpool are keen on signing the Bayer Leverkusen defender Piero Hincapie at the end of the season.

The 22-year-old has established himself as a key player for the German club and he has been an important member of their first team this season. Leverkusen managed to win the league title and Hincapie has been linked with an exit from the club.

A report from Fichajes claims that Liverpool are now taking firm steps to sign the Ecuador international and they will have to shell out a fee in the region of €55 million. It will be interesting to see if Liverpool are prepared to pay that kind of money for him.

Hincapie has proven his quality in the Bundesliga and he has the physical and technical attributes to do well in the Premier League as well. The 22-year-old is versatile enough to operate as a central defender as well as a left back.

Piero Hincapie to replace Joel Matip at Liverpool?

Liverpool will lose Joel Matip at the end of the season when his contract expires and they will have to replace him adequately. Matip has been a key player for them over the years and Hincapie would be a superb alternative.

The reported asking price might seem like a premium right now, but the Ecuador international certainly has the talent and ability to justify the investment in the coming seasons.

A move to the Premier League will be an exciting opportunity for him, and he will look to prove himself in English football. Liverpool are one of the biggest clubs in the world and the opportunity to join them can be hard to turn down.

Liverpool have looked quite vulnerable defensively this season, and they need to tighten up at the back. Signing a central defender should be one of their priorities heading into the summer window.
