Pope Francis will be admitted to Rome’s Gemelli hospital on Friday for diagnostic tests and treatment for bronchitis, the Vatican has announced.
The 88-year-old pontiff, who has been experiencing bronchitis symptoms for several days, will undergo medical care after completing his morning audiences.
“This morning, after his audiences, Pope Francis will be admitted to the Agostino Gemelli Polyclinic for necessary diagnostic tests and to continue hospital treatment for his ongoing bronchitis,” the Vatican statement read.
Due to his condition, the Pope has recently delegated others to read his prepared speeches. On Wednesday, he asked a priest to continue reading on his behalf, stating, “Let me ask the priest to continue to read, because I cannot yet, with my bronchitis. I hope that next time I can.”
He made similar requests during a mass on Sunday and last week’s general audience. In an effort to recover, he also held meetings at his Vatican residence instead of public engagements.
Pope Francis was previously hospitalised for bronchitis in March 2023, when he spent three nights at Gemelli hospital. His health issues led to the cancellation of his trip to the United Arab Emirates for the COP28 climate summit in December.
Having served nearly 12 years as the leader of the Roman Catholic Church, Pope Francis has a history of health challenges. At the age of 21, he had part of one lung removed due to a respiratory infection.
Despite ongoing health concerns, he continues to fulfill his papal duties while receiving medical attention.
