34-year-old Nigerian-born US Naval officer, Michael Aregbesola, has died after falling overboard in the Red Sea.

Aregbesola, an Aviation Machinist’s Mate 2nd Class, was assigned to the “Swamp Foxes” of Helicopter Maritime Strike Squadron (HSM) 74.

He was deployed aboard the USS Mason, which has been operating in the US 5th Fleet area of operations since November.

The circumstances leading to his fall are currently under investigation, but initial reports suggest it was a non-combat-related incident.

Before his recruitment, Aregbesola experienced a prolonged period of unemployment, which he openly discussed on social media.

He expressed gratitude to the US Navy for recognizing his potential and providing him with an opportunity that his country of birth did not.

Commander Eric Kohut, the commanding officer of HSM-74, praised Aregbesola’s character and contributions.

“Petty Officer Aregbesola fully embodied the selfless character and thoughtful warrior spirit of the United States Navy Sailor,” said Commander Kohut.

He also highlighted Aregbesola’s exceptional performance, not just in aircraft maintenance but in his broader role within the ship/air team.

“He will continue on in the heart of every Swamp Fox and our brothers and sisters in the IKE Carrier Strike Group,” Cmdr. Kohut added.

The US Navy has not released further details about the incident pending the outcome of the investigation.
