Peoples Daily newspaper lose sports editor, Akota

The Sports Writer Association of Nigeria (SWAN), FCT Chapter has been thrown into mourning following the death of one of its members, Mr Albert Akota.

Akota who was the sports editor of Abuja based newspaper, Peoples Daily newspaper before his death died on Saturday in Abuja after battling a medical condition.

According to a statement signed by the newspapers’ Chief Operating Officer, Dr Hammeed Bello, Albert, 47, died after an intermittent struggle with a medical condition which he did not survive from.

“Albert hails from Edo State and was a very diligent Sports writer and editor who gave his professional best at all times.

“He will be remembered for his honesty, trustworthiness, uprightness, dedication and team spirit.

“Whether in prosperity or in adversity, Albert was known to have always kept his head with a lot of optimism that success will surely come the way of those who are positive,” the statement said.

Meanwhile, the national leadership of Sports Writer Association of Nigeria (SWAN) has commiserated with its Federal Capital Territory (FCT) chapter over the demise of its immediate past Secretary.

Speaking through a statement by the Association’s Secretary-General, Amb. Ikenna Okonkwo, yesterday President Benjamin said the few times he met the Edo-born Albert, he had been impressed with his gentle approach in relating with people around him.

In the same vein, the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) FCT Council has expressed shock over Akota who was Chairman of Peoples Daily Chapel of NUJ FCT Council describing it as a great loss to the union and journalism profession.
