The People’s Democratic Party (PDP) has defied Court Order and conducted the election for the zonal committee members and national ex-officio for northeast in Bauchi State.

They elected Alhaji Babangida Modibbo Umar as the new northeast Zonal Chairman on Saturday 22nd February, 2025.

This is coming barely a day after the Federal High Court in Abuja presided over by Justice Obiora Atuegwu Egwuatu, restrained the party from conducting the elections.

Recall that, a suit filed by the claimant, Dr Nicholas E Msheliza and two others, against the Respondents/Defendants (People’s Democratic Party, the National Chairman of PDP, the National Vice Chairman, PDP Northeast and four others) was presided over by Justice Obiora Atuegwu Egwuatu.

Delivering the judgement on February 21, 2024 with suit No:FHC/ABJ/CS/298/2025, Justice Egwuatu ordered that: “the Respondents to show cause why the application should not be granted.

“That in the Interim, the Respondents are not to do anything that will render the subject matter in this suit nugatory.

“That the parties are to maintain status quo ante bellum beginning from Friday 21st Day of February, 2025 pending when the Respondents show cause”.

The matter was adjourned to the 25th day of February, 2025 for the Respondents to show cause.

In a dramatic move, the PDP went ahead and conducted the Congress successfully marking a significant milestone in the party’s preparations for the national convention.

The event, which took place at the Dr. Rilwanu Suleiman Adamu Square, Government House, Bauchi, was attended by a multitude of delegates from the North East sub-region.

The congress was witnessed by notable figures, including the Acting National Chairman of the PDP, Ambassador Umar Iliya Damagum, and Governors from Adamawa, Bauchi, and Taraba states.Senator Abdul Ahmed Ningi and Senator Hassan Dankombo and others, Former governor of Bauchi State Ahmed Adamu Mu’azu and Others, national and state assembly members, and other party stalwarts were also in attendance.

In a demonstration of unity and cohesion, all 22 positions were elected unopposed, with Alhaji Babangida Modibbo Umar from Adamawa State emerging as the new Zonal Chairman of the PDP in the North East sub-region. The Chairman of the Electoral Committee, Architect Ruben Okoya, announced the election results.

Ambassador Umar Iliya Damagum praised the success of the congress, stating that it was a testament to the party’s unity and strength. He emphasized that similar congresses would be held in all zones across the country, leading up to the national convention.

Alhaji Babangida Modibbo Umar, the newly elected Zonal Chairman, expressed his gratitude to the delegates and pledged to justify the confidence reposed in him. He takes over from Rev. Emmanuel Bovoa from Taraba State.

The PDP’s North East zonal congress is part of the party’s broader efforts to reorganize and strengthen its structures ahead of the national convention.

The party has released a timetable for the 2025 zonal congresses, which includes the election of new zonal working committees and national ex-officio members.
