Former President Olusegun Obasanjo, on Monday, warned the Nigerian youth against committing suicide as an escape route to their problems.

He told them to rather face their challenges and find ways out instead of ending their lives.

Obasanjo spoke at a youth leadership symposium with the theme “Opportunities for Peace: Roles of The Youth in Conflict Prevention in Africa” held at Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library, Abeokuta, as part of activities lined up for the 87th birthday of the former president.

Obasanjo condemned some of the youth committing suicide because of difficulties of life, saying that such ungodly and illegal act has never been known to solve any problems.

He said, “When the time is rough and tough, the tough must get going, no problem is new and no problem will be permanent. Committing suicide is not the end of any problem; confront it and take it to God because he could do anything. When you have a problem, look at those who have had this problem before and how they overcame it,” he urged.

Meanwhile, the Niger State governor, Mohammed Umaru Bago, has extolled the virtues of the former president on his 87th birthday.

The governor in a birthday message by his Chief Press Secretary, Bologi Ibrahim, described Obasanjo as an exceptional, patriotic and committed leader who used the best of his years for the survival, unity, stability and development of not only Nigeria, but the African continent.
