Nigeria’s Chinecherem Prosper Nnamdi has won the gold medal in the men’s Javelin event at the 13th African Games title in Ghana.

He becomes the fourth Nigerian ever to do so after Anthony Oyakhire (1965), Christian Okemefula (1991) and Pius Bazighe (1995).

Nnamdi won the gold in grand style by not only defeating the defending champion and Games record-holder, Julius Yego, but also bettering the National Record (NR) he set two years ago, to a flighty mark of 82.80m, which automatically doubles as a new Personal Best (PB).

That mark also makes him the first Nigerian man to throw over 82m.

Also worthy of note is the fact that the winning distance of the Junior from Baylor University, was recorded in his first attempt. Furthermore, the African Games is his first competition in 2024!

Yego’s mark of 81.74m allowed him to safely secure the Silver medal while Abdel Khaliq Mostafa of Egypt got Bronze with a mark of 78.10m. Team Nigeria’s Samuel Kure placed 5th with a distance of 76.28m, courtesy of his last attempt.
