Nigerian Fadugba Wins Grand Prize At Norval Sovereign African Art Prize 2025

LAGOS – Modupeola Fadugba, a Nigerian multi-media artist, has been awarded the grand prize at the Norval Sovereign African Art Prize 2025 hosted by Norval Foundation in Cape Town.

A statement by the media consultant to Fadugba, said that this recognition underscored her exceptional talent and the profound impact of her captivating artwork, ‘Portrait of an Artist at Ease.’

The ‘Portrait of an Artist at Ease’, the winning piece, is an artwork that delves into Fadugba’s milestones and the journey of artistic self-discovery and mastery, the statement added.

According to the statement, the artwork featured a striking interplay of dark and golden hues, with the artist emerging ethereally from a black background.

“The use of gold and black creates a sense of mystery and revelation as if the artist is part of the darkness yet breaking free.

“The artwork’s technical mastery, emotional resonance and thought-provoking narrative, deeply resonated with the judges, setting it apart from the impressive pool of submissions,” the statement added.

The statement quoted Fadugba as expressing delight with the award.

She lauded the judges for recognising the power of her my work, stressing that ‘Portrait of an Artist at Ease’ was a piece that was close to her heart.

She maintained that it represented decade-long journey as an artist.

“I believe that art has the ability to spark dialogue and inspire change, and I am hopeful that this award will help amplify the important messages embedded in my work,” she added.
