The senator representing Kogi Central, Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, on Tuesday, filed a N100 billion naira defamation suit against Senate President Godswill Akpabio.
The lawsuit follows last weeks controversy over seating arrangements in the Senate, leading to Senator Natasha facing disciplinary review by the Senate’s Committee on Ethics, Privileges, and Public Petitions.
In the suit filed at the federal capital territory high court, Akpoti-Uduaghan alleged that Akpabio and his legislative aide, Mfon Patrick, made defamatory comments against her.
The disciplinary committee was given two weeks to submit its findings, with potential implications for Akpoti-Uduaghan’s standing.
Senate President, Godswill Akpabio during plenary suggested that her unfamiliarity with Senate procedures contributed to the controversy.
Reactions have trailed the Memoir by former military president, Ibrahim Badamisi Babangida, “A Journey in Service” unveiled last week.
Babangida in the memoir had claimed, that forces against the June 12 election were led by the late general Sani Abacha, his chief of defense staff who later became military head of state.
The election which was wildly regarded as the freeest and fairest election in Nigeria’s history was presided over by late Professor Humphrey Nwosu, the NEC Chairman at the time.
In an interview that has resurfaced online, Professor Nwosu mentioned several names of those he said were involved in the schemes that led to the annulment of the election.
Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Femi Falana, has stated that the late MKO Abiola was already recognized by Nigerians as the elected president since 1993. Falana made this comment during a television interview on Tuesday.
He noted that Babangida’s admission merely confirms what Nigerians have believed about June 12.
