The Minister of State for Housing and Urban Development, Yusuf Abdullahi Ata, weekend, stated his intention to resign from the All Progressives Congress (APC) if Abdullahi Abbas is re-elected as the party’s chairman in Kano state.
In his speech at Fagge local government area of the state, Ata stated the need for responsible leadership within the APC, adding that leaders who resort to insults have weakened the party’s public image that contributed to its defeat in the 2023 elections.
His warning came amid growing tensions within the Kano APC, as Abbas faces criticisms over alleged inflammatory remarks targeting the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) and Kano state governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf.
Ata’s stance highlights the deepening rift within the party, raising concerns about internal unity ahead of future elections.
Ata said the party won the governorship election in 2023 but failed because they challenged God.
However, he threatened to defect from the party should it fail to change its leadership in the state.
He said: “We are making it clear to everyone, if they bring him back, we will leave. The party will surely fail again. We are not with such people, and no matter what happens, we will not align with them. They send us messages, and we respond accordingly.
“We were raised with good moral upbringing; we know who God is, we respect our scholars and elders, and we will not compromise our values. If they insist on bringing him back, we will leave, and I swear, the party will fall again.”
