National Chairman of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), Dr. Agbo Major, speaks to CHIBUIKE CHUKWU on the party’s recent National Convention where he was unanimously elected. He also speaks on how Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso and Kwankwasiya movement allegedly attempted to destroy the party and NNPP’s plan for 2027, among other issues. Excerpts
Congratulations once again on your election as NNPP National President. How would you respond to the allegations by the Kwankwaso group that the convention that brought you was illegal?
Well, I hardly respond to issues like that because I know it’s not within their powers to declare any convention properly convened by NNPP as legal or illegal. The law is there on the procedures for holding convention and those procedures were outrightly and adequately followed. Among the procedures are that you mobilise from the wards through the government, yes, and then you came up with a notice of convention, among others and all were duly followed. So it’s not within them to say legal or illegal. I think they are just feeling bad that they lost it. They came into the party, created so many problems, and the MoU that brought them was terminated, and they were asked to go. So they are feeling thoroughly bad. That’s the only reason why they are making such statements. Nigerians will have to disregard such statements. The party has held its convention and the leaders have emerged. Remember that it wasn’t just the convention. It started from the wards, you know, in line with the judgment of the Abuja High Court, which said that the Board of Trustees of the party should activate all the organs of the party; that is the judgment of 1st of November. So the process, which started from the wards on the 13th of January, was only concluded on the 4th of February with that national convention, which they are struggling so hard to try to mess up. But like I said, it’s not within their powers to declare any convention legal or illegal.
Ladipo Johnson, the erstwhile National Publicity Secretary of NNPP, alleged that during the local government election in Kano — the only NNPP state — you and your supporters worked against Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf and worked for the APC. He alleged that by that singular act, you people engaged in anti-party activities, can you respond to this?
There is nothing that Ladipo Johnson does not allege. As a matter of fact, we have concluded that he’s not a normal person. Something must be wrong with him somewhere, otherwise, why all these wild allegations that he keeps making? Today, it is against Agbo Major. Tomorrow, it’s against Aniebonam, the next morning, it’s against INEC. I’m sure that one day he’s also going to make the same unfounded allegations against his principal, Musa Kwankwaso, because he has no control over what he says. On working against NNPP, how could a man who gave birth to a child for 22 years in 2002, want to do anything that is against that child’s interests? It’s unimaginable. NNPP is like a baby we gave birth to in 2002. We have been nursing the baby until 2022 when they came. The baby is now 24 years old. And then somebody would come to allege that the father or the mother is working against it. I think that’s unimaginable. We don’t dissipate energy responding to what Ladipo Johnson says because he’s always permanently high on one thing or the other. We are not interested in what he says. Let me tell you, what happened in Kano was simple. They tried to bring on board their Kwankwasiya members to take over the 44 local government councils, both the chairmanship seats and the ward councillorship seats. And we said no, that the Kwankwasiya team or the Kwankwasiya movement is no longer in our party. And so you cannot come and then drop a list of all the entire Kwankwasiya members to take over the local governments. Of course, you’re also aware that even the chairman of the Kano State Independent Electoral Commission is an active member, a card-carrying member of the Kwankwasiya group. These are the anomalies that we said, no, they would not happen because they shut out all those who are not of the Kwankwasiya stock. And as the chairman of the party, I said, no, that was never going to happen. And that’s why we went to court, went to Federal High Court in Kano and the judgment was duly delivered that the candidates that would be our candidates at that election, were mostly the candidates that were presented by the Agbo Major NNPP, that was the judgment. But these are things that they will never tell people in the open. They will only come and begin to make wild allegations that they cannot substantiate. So the stalemate in Kano, as I speak to you now, is that they have illegal people that are occupying the seats, you know, and that is total and flagrant abuse, I mean abuse of the Federal High Court judgment, which says that the Agbo Major-led NNPP is the only authentic NNPP leadership that has the right and the authority to field candidates for that election. Like I said, whatever they are saying in respect of that election is clearly out of not just ignorance, but out of mischief and out of deep seated anger that I frustrated them from having their way. Their way was to ensure that the 44 local governments are occupied by Kwankwasiya. So at the end of the day, they would come to say that Kano is occupied by Kwankwasiya members; that was what we frustrated. So it’s just like me now coming to ask you to do the right thing in your community meeting. And then you say no, you will not do with this and that. And then at the end of the day, I decided to say, okay, let the court look at what I’m saying and also look at what you are saying. And at the end of the day, the court says, no, what Agbo Major is saying is the right thing. Do it this way for it to be seen to have been properly done. Out of anger, you could go out of your way to say whatever you want to say. That’s exactly the situation we have in our hands in Kano. So ignore all these things that Ladipo Johnson, Musa Kwankwaso, Buba Galadima, and all those other clowns are saying. It makes no sense to us. As far as we are concerned, we cannot work against a party that we registered, nurtured and spent so much money on and also dissipated so much energy to build for 22 years before they came. They are just about two years old in the party. And so they are not the ones to tell us what should happen to the party and so on and so forth.
He also alleged that Agbo Major and his group are no more members of the NNPP and by virtue of that, the convention is a nulity. Was there any time you and your group were expelled from the party, even if such was overturned?
There was never any time Dr. Agbo Major was expelled from NNPP. There was never any time Olaposi Oginni was expired from NNPP. These people just sit down in the comfort of their rooms and then cook up all sorts of things and then go to the media, go to the TV houses to say it. What they don’t know is that they don’t know how a political party works. They only understand how Kwankwasiya works and Kwankwasiya is a product of one man who sees himself as a demigod, you know, who dishes out instructions and ensures that those instructions are followed. So, without understanding how a political party works, they cannot speak with facts. And it’s unfortunate that they are disappointed because no political party works that way. So nobody has expelled us for whatever reason. And then the procedure for expulsion is clearly and obviously stated in our constitution. So whatever they think they are saying makes no meaning to us. They are politicians, they can say whatever they want to say out of mischief and malice. There was never any time any of us were expelled from our party; that’s what I can tell you.
After the convention, you called for unity. Now, have you made any efforts to reach out to aggrieved members, perhaps outside the Kwankwasiya movement, especially in Kano, the only NNPP state?
During my acceptance speech at the convention, I made it very, very clear that those who left our party out of anger because of the activities of the Kwankwasiya group should return, now that the Kwankwasiya group is gone with their mischief. All those who left out of anger for whatever reason should return. I also tell all executives that we would make frantic efforts to reach out to people. Since then, I can tell you that we have not relaxed. We have just been on the road talking to people. As I speak to you now, I just came back from Maiduguri, where we are moving round to talk to all those who left out of anger. In the case of Kano particularly, if you have followed me since after the convention, I’ve made it clear that outside those who are expelled from our party like Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, Buba Galadima and their likes, others should return. You recall that the governor only got a suspension which was renewed again for another six months, which expired at the end of January. And I made it very clear that the governor is yet to be expelled from the party. He’s just under suspension and that in due course, the National Working Committee would make a statement. And we have reached out to him. We have tried to let him understand that where he is going to will not be of any help to him because his Kwankwasiya group through which he came is no longer part of our party, so he should retrace his steps and take his destiny in his hands instead of following one man who believes that his words must be seen as commandments, who believes that his words must be seen as laws. This is because if the governor follows him, Kwankwaso will only help to destroy him politically. Now you can see the level of agitation against the governor on the streets of Kano. You can see the level of disrespect that he’s presently facing on the streets of Kano. You can see what is happening to him. So we are reaching out to everybody. You probably may not know that the critical members of the National Assembly from Kano and principal officers have already pitched tent with us because they’ve come to see that this is the place to be. The man that is disgraced from office, the SSG that is disgraced from office, Dr. Baffa Bichi, is working closely with us. So these are people that we feel are special members of our party, not the ones who have been expelled. So we’re in touch with a lot of them. We are talking and they are also working with us very closely. And I can tell you that we’re making serious progress. We made it a promise and we are working on it. We’ve gone round the country. We’re still going around and we’re talking to those who we believe are very, very important and useful to us.
Perhaps when there is a change of mind from the Kwankwasiya group, will there be a plan to reintegrate them into the NNPP?
No, no, no. Kwankwaso and Buba Galadima can never, with emphasis, never find their way or rather their ways into NNPP anymore. They are gone and gone for good. They are mischievous people, very wicked souls, unimaginably terrible. So there’s no place for them because our NNPP is the party for the ordinary people. They introduced all sorts of things that were not known to the party. They brought in corruption, collecting money from candidates everywhere, doing all sorts of things, you know, manipulating the system. They took our situation room to their house in Maitama where they uploaded people they wanted, not even the people that emerged from primaries. As I talk to you now, the EFCC is beaming searchlight on our account, the party’s account for the first time. Several billions of naira were raised in that party’s account and they were stolen. They were siphoned into private accounts of non-existing members, including minors, people who cannot even sign signatures. If I start telling you what the EFCC has found out from the details of our accounts that they have, it’s terrible. But because it is an investigation and it’s still ongoing, I don’t need to preempt what they are doing. But I can tell you that what they brought into the party is what we have never been known for. And so the party has zero tolerance for such kind of people. They are gone and gone forever. Even if they decide to turn saints today, they can never be trusted anymore. They don’t have any place in NNPP.
There was a story sometime ago of a planned merger between Labour Party and NNPP ahead of 2027 to see whether it can unseat the ruling party. How true is that and are you aware of that?
We are aware that Kwankwaso and his co-travellers were talking with some other parties. And we quickly came out promptly to warn Nigerians and those who were talking with them that they have no authority to speak or authority to discuss anything on behalf of NNPP. So they lost all those opportunities. As I speak to you now, I am not sure that any serious-minded politician is talking with Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso in this country or the Kwankwasiya group. If you watch, you will see that nobody is talking with them. For Labour Party, will Peter Obi ever trust Kwankwaso? This is the same person who came out on the way to 2023 to say that Peter Obi was a junior. Who is talking about senior or junior in politics? At the end of the day, did he come ahead of Peter Obi? He came behind Peter Obi. He has unnecessary pride and stupidity, and that is what has affected him. He thinks he is everything. He thinks he knows everything. Somebody who is bigger than you is bigger than you. Peter Obi is far bigger than Kwankwaso now. So he is on his own. If any person is discussing anything with him, maybe the person is discussing with him as Kwankwaso, not for NNPP.
Ahead of the next general election, what is the plan of NNPP in terms of zoning presidential candidate?
One thing that happened in 2023 that we didn’t like was that they cornered the ticket of our party and kept it for one man. He went and put it in his bedroom. And that was never known to the party. So as I speak to you now, as to where our presidential candidate would come from, honestly, I cannot tell you that. The only thing I can tell you is that our field is open, anybody who wants to run on the platform of NNPP is free to come up to declare his or her intentions to run on the party’s platform and follow what he or she needs to follow, which is to purchase the forms, to make his declaration, and go into the primary election. Whoever wins, irrespective of where the person is coming from, will be our candidate. So we are working. And I can tell you that as we speak, a lot of candidates, a lot of aspirants are already talking to us. These were people that were kept at bay because they were always saying that they cannot be on the same boat with Kwankwaso because of his treacherous nature; they cannot be on the same boat with Buba Galadima because of his treacherous nature. They said now that both men have been out of the party, they are now ready to come. So I won’t mention names, but as I speak to you, I’m sure that if you nose around, you will see that so far, I’m not sure we have anything less than 10 aspirants that are talking to us. At the appropriate time, we’ll make their names known. And we have already prepared their minds that they should be ready to go into primary elections. And whoever emerges on the primary would be the flag bearer.
