From Taiwo Oluwadare, Ibadan
Oyo State Governor, ‘Seyi Makinde, has emphasized the urgent need for Nigeria to build an economy that can withstand challenge’s, ensuring sustainable prosperity for its citizens. Speaking at the funeral service of his elder brother, Engr. Olufunmilayo Sunday Makinde, the governor highlighted the importance of entrepreneurship and quality education in driving economic growth.
Makinde, responding to a sermon by Bishop Williams Aladekungbe of Ibadan North Anglican Diocese at the Bishop Akinyele Memorial Anglican Church, Ibadan, pointed out that natural resources alone do not guarantee prosperity. Using Venezuela and Finland as examples, he argued that Nigeria must go beyond resource dependence and prioritize human capital development.
He explained that his administration has consistently allocated over 20% of Oyo State’s budget to education, aligning with UNESCO’s recommendations. This, he said, is a deliberate effort to equip young people with the skills needed to transform natural resources into economic wealth.
“The world has moved from coal to oil, and soon, it will move to something else. We must prepare for that shift by building an economy that is resilient,” Makinde stated.
The governor paid tribute to his late brother, describing him as a selfless and principled man who sacrificed his university education to support the family. He expressed his grief over the unexpected loss but found solace in the belief that his brother lived a meaningful life.
In honor of his late brother, Makinde announced a ₦25 million donation to the church, emphasizing the need to live a life that leaves a positive legacy.
In his sermon, Bishop Aladekungbe stressed the importance of proper resource management, warning against excessive borrowing. He urged Nigeria’s leaders to prioritize accountability and transparency, stating that the country has no reason to remain poor if resources are well managed.
The funeral service was attended by prominent figures, including the Chairman of the PDP Governors’ Forum and Bauchi State Governor, Senator Bala Mohammed; Osun State Governor, Senator Ademola Adeleke; Plateau State Governor, Caleb Mutfwang; and several other political leaders, traditional rulers, and dignitaries.
Governor Makinde concluded by reaffirming his commitment to policies that would empower Nigerians, ensuring a future where the country’s wealth benefits all its people.
