Kano State governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf, has performed the ground-breaking of a N15 billion three-layer interchange bridge at Kofar Dan’agundi in the Kano metropolis.

Speaking at the project site on Sunday, the governor reiterated his administration’s vision to elevate the city centre to the status of a mega city.

The project was awarded in December 2023, with a stipulated completion period of eighteen months.

He said the project and another high-impact interchange bridge at Tal’udu roundabout, valued at 12 billion naira, were aimed at alleviating traffic congestion.

“We have established alternative routes, and it is imperative for motorists to adhere to safety regulations and facilitate the smooth operation of the project,” the governor said.

Mr Gee Wang, the project manager of CGC Nigeria Limited, the contractor, assured that the project would be completed within the specified timeframe.

Meanwhile, the governor ordered the prompt settlement of outstanding allowances owed to street sweepers in the state.

He gave the directive during a meeting with the representatives of the sweepers at the Government House in Kano, according to a statement by his spokesperson, Sanusi Bature Dawakin Tofa yesterday.

Expressing dissatisfaction with the delay in payment of the approved allowances, Governor Yusuf instructed the Ministry of Environment and the Refuse Management and Sanitation Board (REMASAB) to ensure the clearance of all outstanding payments owed to the sweepers inherited from the previous administration.

The governor dismissed speculations suggesting that the state government intended to dismiss the street sweepers inherited from the previous administration.

He emphasised his commitment to ensuring that casual workers have the opportunity to earn a livelihood, stating, “I want to make it unequivocally clear that I have not, and will not, authorize the dismissal of any of you here for any reason.”
