The Jigawa State House of Assembly has constituted an ad hoc committee to scrutinise the state’s electoral and local government laws.

This followed a motion by Abubakar Kallo (who represents Hadejia Constituency), in response to a report by the House Committee on Local Government regarding a communiqué from the Inter-Party Advisory Council, IPAC.

DAILY POST reported that IPAC in Jigawa State advocated for the amendment of the state’s electoral law to provide political parties with a notice period of 360 days to adequately prepare for elections.

The council highlighted the need for reform in light of the prevailing economic, social, and political circumstances affecting citizens across the state.

The motion was seconded by the chairman of the House Committee on Local Government, Aminu Zakari, and was unanimously approved by other members who recommended that concerns raised by IPAC be considered.

The Speaker of the House, Haruna Aliyu Dangyatin, announced the adoption of the report and constituted the ad hoc committee, headed by the Deputy Speaker, Sani Isyaku Abubakar.

DAILY POST recalls that the main opposition party in Jigawa State, the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, has distanced itself from the decision of the IPAC, requesting an extension of the local government council election by one year.

The tenure of the Jigawa State local government councils’ chairmen and councillors is expiring by July this year.
