The South West Governors Forum Thursday met in Lagos and resolved to take steps to prevent Islamic State of West Africa (ISWAP and other terrorist groups from invading the region.
The meeting held in Lagos was attended by all the six South-west states, including Governor Seyi Makinde ( Oyo), Dapo Abiodun (Ogun), Biodun Oyebamiji (Ekiti), Demola Adeleke (Osun), Lucky Ayedatiwa (Ondo) and Babajide Sanwo-Olu (Lagos).
Briefing the press after the meeting, Governor Sanwo-Olu, who read the communique of the meeting that lasted for four hours, said the region cannot afford not to take steps to prevent invasion of the territory by terrorist groups.
The forum condemned threat to the region security and encouraged collaboration with Nigeria Police Force and local security outfit.
It urged the security operatives in the South west to be vigilant, saying, “one urges them to remain vigilant to take necessary action against any form of threat. We urge our special advisers on security to establish a joint surveillance monitoring and foil the security threat across the region.
“The forum has committed advanced technology that will enhance security operations. Additionally, the forum agrees to strengthen intelligence gathering and bring collaboration between our state’s security operatives within our state and local security efforts and of course federal enforcement authority.”
The communiqué reads in part: “The forum also commends President Bola Tinubu for the economic stability and the improvement he has recorded across the nation, particularly the sustained supply distribution of petroleum products and the stabilisation of the exchange rate. It therefore urged Nigerians to continue to support his administration.
“The citizens should continue to support the president’s effort to improve the overall well being of all Nigerians.”
