The Inspector General of Police, Kayode Adeola Egbetokun will deliver the 22nd Convocation Lecture of the Federal Polytechnic, Ilaro, scheduled for February 19, 2025.
The Rector of the Polytechnic, Dr. Mukail Aremu Akinde, who disclosed this during a media chat organized to herald the convocation ceremony and the 45th Founder’s Day of the institution, added that the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Management, Festus Keyamo, SAN and two illustrious alumni of the polytechnic, Biodun Durosinmi, Chief Finance Officer of the Zenith Bank and Alaba Jacob Afolabi, a United Kingdom based accounting software expert, will be conferred with the honourary fellowship awards, as parts of activities lined up for the event.
According to the Rector, IGP Egbetokun will centre his lecture on a theme: “Renewed Hope Agenda, Brain Drain and Japa Syndrome: The Way Forward”.
Akinde explained that the polytechnic which was established in 1979 with 7 departments is now running 48 courses cutting across various fields of study.
He stated further that the institution since its establishment has contributed immensely to the technological development of Nigeria and invented various technology innovations.
Akinde, who is also an alumnus of the polytechnic, listed innovations and technological breakthroughs achieved by the institution to include a mechanical ventilator, which was certified by the University of Ibadan; electric tricycle, solar-powered tricycle and CNG-powered tricycle;
dual mode juice extractor; stone crushing machine, among others.
While saying that some of the inventions by the school are undergoing a patenting process, the Rector disclosed that the Federal Polytechnic, Ilaro, will soon begin Schools of Agriculture and Arts, Design and Printing Technology.
He added that the polytechnic radio station will be officially inaugurated to serve as training grounds for students of the school as well as the campus community.
Akinde, however, urged the Federal Government and state governments to make more funds available to polytechnics, if the country desires to change the narrative of its technological development and industrialization.
“If we want to change the narrative of the technological development of Nigeria, both the Federal and State governments must be ready to fund polytechnic education properly.
“Also, efforts must be made to solve the issue of power, while steel development must be given utmost priority. This is because we need a well developed foundry for metallurgical and mechanical fabrications, to drive our industrial development”, the Rector stated.
He commended the senator representing Ogun West, Solomon Olamilekan Adeola otherwise known as Yayi and the Olu of Ilaro and Paramount Ruler of Yewaland, Oba Kehinde Olugbenle, for their respective contributions to the Federal Polytechnic, Ilaro.
