Hunger: Tinubu directs total compliance with Export Prohibition Act

President Bola Tinubu on Friday directed total compliance with the Export Prohibition Act to check the smuggling of food items and other commodities out of the country.

Mr Wale Adeniyi, the Comptroller-General of the Nigeria Customs Service, disclosed this during meeting with the leaders and members of the Dawanau International Grains Market Kano.

According to him, the Act had not been implemented in the past because the country was having sufficient food then.

He stated that now that Nigeria is going through hunger, the president has directed that the Act must be fully implemented.

Mr Wale noted that the move was to ensure that food items were not exported to neighbouring countries when people are in need.

The comptroller-general then urged the Dawanu grains dealers to assist the government and the law enforcement agency by complying with the directive banning the exportation of food items to provide enough food to the people.

”It is unwise for a reasonable and sincere country to embark on the exportation of food items when her own citizens are in need of them.

“You are big stakeholders in this direction and these are the reasons why I am here to interact with you and solicit for your support,” he said.
