In a significant move aimed at reforming the education sector, Governor Ademola Adeleke of Osun State has announced the enforcement of a new retirement age and length of service for teachers across the state. The decision comes as part of efforts to enhance educational standards and ensure the welfare of educators in Osun State.

The directive, conveyed through a circular issued by the Office of the Head of Service, Mr. Ayanleye Aina, mandates strict compliance with the new guidelines for individuals seeking to benefit from the revised retirement age. It further instructed the Ministry of Finance and the State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB) to halt salary payments to those who have been availing themselves of the new retirement age without meeting the stipulated conditions.

Aina emphasized the importance of the new guidelines, stating, “For any Officer to enjoy the new retirement age and length of Service, the concerned Officer is requested to ensure that the guidelines are strictly adhered to.”

According to the guidelines outlined in the circular, eligible officers must fulfill several conditions, including being within the recognized education cadre, registered with the Teachers Registration Council of Nigeria (TRCN), and certified as medically fit by a qualified medical practitioner. Additionally, applicants must not be under any disciplinary action.

The application process for individuals seeking to benefit from the revised retirement age involves submitting an application endorsed by the Head Teacher or Principal to the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Education, accompanied by relevant documents such as TRCN certificates, medical fitness certificates, and licenses issued by TRCN.

A committee, to be established by the Office of the Head of Service, will screen eligible applicants, with successful candidates being deployed to serve as teachers in schools. Unsuccessful applicants will be advised to retire immediately under the existing retirement scheme.

Governor Ademola Adeleke’s initiative underscores the government’s commitment to enhancing the quality of education and ensuring the well-being of teachers in Osun State.
