The Dr. Uzor Cares Foundation, established by the erstwhile Chief of Staff to Enugu State Government, Dr Festus Uzor, has awarded a bursary of N8.7 million to 87 Udi/Ezeagu constituents studying in various tertiary institutions across Nigeria.
Speaking at the launch of the foundation in Enugu, Dr Uzor explained that the NGO was dedicated to poverty alleviation through education, vocational training, healthcare assistance and entrepreneurship support.
He revealed that the foundation had also funded hospital bills and provided palliatives to over 200 indigent widows and physically challenged persons across Enugu State.
He said: “Our Foundation works tirelessly to improve lives, fostering meaningful change for those in need. We are committed to creating a better future for individuals and communities, driven by a deep sense of purpose and collective action.
“Our foundation envisions a society where poverty is reduced to the barest minimum and where everyone, particularly our youths, has access to essential resources, education and support to lead a meaningful life.”
On the bursary selection process, he disclosed that 135 applications were received, 90 candidates underwent verification, and 87 were deemed eligible. Each recipient received N100,000 for the 2025 academic year.
Speaking at the event, Enugu State Deputy Governor, Ifeanyi Ossai, commended the initiative, emphasising that education remains the bedrock of a progressive society.
He urged the beneficiaries to maximise the opportunity, stressing that true education goes beyond certificates to intellectual and personal liberation.
The senator representing Enugu West Senatorial District, Osita Ngwu, also lauded the foundation, describing the gesture as a significant act of empowerment. He pledged financial support and encouraged the students to remain focused on their studies.
