Fire razes Lagos markets, destroys goods worth millions

Fire Tuesday razed down some shops and destroyed goods worth millions at the popular Ladipo market in Lagos.

Another inferno also gutted goods and shops at Owode Onirin Market along Ikorodu Road, Lagos.

It was gathered that the fire incidents started in the early hours of Tuesday and engulfed several shops and warehouses stocked with mechanical tools, vehicle spare parts, motorcycles, and household electrical appliances.

The Permanent Secretary, Lagos State Emergency Management Agency, Dr Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, confirmed this in a statement on Tuesday.

According to him, the agency received distress calls through its 767 and 112 emergency toll-free lines at about 00.09hrs concerning the fire outbreak.

Oke-Osanyintolu said that there was no record of injury or loss of life during the incident.

He said the goods destroyed include electronics, generating sets, bicycles, auto spare parts, phones, and home appliances.

He added that occupants of the warehouse have been sensitised on the appropriate safety measures to take to prevent a re-occurrence in the future.
