LAGOS – The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has approved and commenced implementation of the Annual Firefighters Medical Certification Test for its firemen.
Comrade Sunday Ugbeikwu, the President, Nigerian Aviation Fire and Safety Association (NAFSA), stated this yesterday in an interview with journalists at the Murtala Muhammed Airport (MMA), Lagos.
Already, the firefighting test had been concluded in some of the international airports across the country, while it is hoped that the same would be replicated in domestic airports.
According to Ugbeikwu, Mrs. Olubunmi Kuku, the Managing Director, FAAN, gave the approval for the implementation of the test, recently, which would be conducted on all FAAN’s firefighters across the nation’s airports.
Ugbeikwu said that Kuku during a meeting with the executives of NAFSA in her office in Lagos, vowed not to take the health of the firefighters for granted, saying that their job is hazardous.
The Annual Firefighters Medical Certification Test is a comprehensive medical fitness test carried out to ascertain the health status of FAAN’s firefighters, in view of the hazardous nature of the firefighting job.
NAFSA President, said that the exercise is the first of its kind in FAAN, adding that the overall objective of the exercise was to mitigate mortality in active service.
Ugbeikwu also lauded Kuku for her commitment towards the health and well-being of FAAN firefighters.
He said: “The national leadership of NAFSA wishes to laud the MD/CE FAAN on the implementation of the Firefighters Annual Medical Certification Test, which had been concluded in some international airports.
“We appreciate the FAAN management for the success of the exercise. However, we wish to request that the exercise should be extended to the other domestic airports across the country as the health and well-being of all the firefighters are equally paramount.”
