In a tragic turn of events, the northern region of Kenya was rocked by a bomb blast that claimed the lives of five individuals, as confirmed by the interior ministry on Monday. The explosion occurred in El Wak town, located in Mandera County near the border with Somalia.
In addition to the fatalities, five others sustained injuries in the attack.
Authorities revealed that the bomb had been concealed on a donkey cart, a method employed to evade detection.
This incident follows a recent escalation of violence in the region, with gunmen suspected to be associated with al-Shabab storming El Wak hospital earlier this month, inquiring about the whereabouts of medical personnel.
Notorious for cross-border incursions, al-Shabab has targeted remote Kenyan counties, particularly Mandera and Garissa. The militant group has repeatedly voiced threats against Kenyan forces due to their prolonged presence in Somalia, as part of multinational endeavors aimed at stabilizing the conflict-ridden nation.
The African Union Transition Mission in Somalia is slated to conclude in December, shifting the responsibility for security primarily onto Somali forces.
