The Edo state government has said schools are critical institutions for learning and development, declaring that any attack on them is an attack on the future of the state.

The government condemned the increasing cases of arson and vandalism on school buildings and properties across the state.

The Executive Chairman, Edo State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB), Barrister Onomen Briggs, disclosed this in a statement she issued on Monday.

Onomen discribed the activities of vandals as reprehensible, noting, “it will not only jeopardize the future of our children but also undermine the collective efforts of the government and stakeholders in providing quality education for all.”

She warned that the government will not tolerate the acts of destruction, adding, “we assure the public that the perpetrators of these crimes will be identified and brought to justice.

“The Edo State Government, through relevant security agencies, is intensifying efforts to track down those responsible and ensure that they face the full wrath of the law.”

The SUBEB chair called on community leaders, parents, guardians, and all well-meaning citizens to take ownership of school facilities within their localities.

He said security and vigilance were collective responsibilities and urge communities to remain alert and report any suspicious activities around school premises to the appropriate authorities.

According to her, “The government remain committed to providing a safe and conducive learning environment for all students in Edo State.

“Together, we must protect our schools and secure the future of our children.”
